Brucellosis

Brucella is a an aerobic, gram-negative coccobacillus

It is a facultative intracellular pathogen

-It is transmitted by ingestion of infected unpasteurized milk or cheese, or contact with infected meat 

– In the United States, brucellosis is most frequently reported in the south and southwest

Symptoms & Signs 

Fever, chills, headache, fatigue, cervical and axillary lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, meningitis, anterosuperior epiphysitis (Pom’s sign), parrot beak osteophytes 

Diagnosis 

Diagnosis can be established by serology and culture 

Treatment 

Doxycycline, rifampin, streptomycin, gentamicin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
